What to do at Mountain Splendour

We have lots of queries about what types of activities there are at Mountain Splendour and the surrounding areas. To make sure you get the most out of your stay at Mountain Splendour we have provided a brief outline of activities below. If you require any further information, we will be happy to assist you.

Family Fun

Facilities and activities at Mountain Splendour

  • Tennis courts and Volley ball court (tennis rackets, balls and volley balls are available for hire from reception).
  • Swimming pool. UPGRADED in 2014 to a 20m rock pool with a slide and kiddies paddling area!
  • Large children’s playground.
  • An animal farm and pony rides.
  • Kiddies tree climb.
  • Help Milk Mary our Moo every morning.
  • Tea and scones are served daily at 10am. The fresh cream comes from Mary our Moo!
  • Plenty of open space for cricket, rounders/baseball or football (balls and bats can be hired).
  • Indoor activities such as table tennis, darts and TV with Supersport and SABC channels. Table tennis bats and balls can be hired from reception. Darts for hire to over 12’s only.
  • During peak periods we organise a variety of entertainment for kids and families.
  • There are short walking trails around the farm.  Provided there is sufficient interest, hikes into the high berg (either from Injusuthi or Monks Cowl) are guided personally by our staff.
  • On warm sunny days there are shady picnic sites along the river and safe spots to swim in the river.  In peak season we organise picnics at Injusuthi. Note there is a charge to enter KZN Wildlife reserves.
  • Tubing in the local river (water levels permitting during the summer months).
  • Nearly 10km of purpose built MTB track around the property.
  • Mountain Biking and Running Trails. If you are a keen mountain biker or runner, we are only a short distance from plantations providing runners with traffic free forest roads and mountain bikers with some superb single track riding and challenging hills!  You need a permit to access the plantations which can be obtained from reception. We have a limited number of mountain bikes for hire.
  • Kiddies MTB tracks. One short section of track is located just below the tennis courts; it includes some sharp bends, steps and a couple of bridges.
  • MTB Skills Park completed in 2015.
  • Well stocked MTB shop and basic bike servicing.
  • Book exchange – swop your finished novel for one in our collection.
  • Various board games and cards to hire (enquire at reception).
  • Outdoor chess set.

Camping teens

Teens do like to camp! With an increasing number of teens joining us we have started to amend our evening entertainment to cater for our young adults! In season we ensure that there is some entertainment reserved for teens only. Sit under the stars, braai stokbrood or marshmallows and do what teens do best – chillax!!

Our large stands allow for an extra tent to be pitched, so many of our families with teenagers pitch a small dome tent on their site. Apparently the “Mountain Splendour Teens” have a Wattsapp group – but I am an adult so have not been sent an invite to join!

CHILDREN IN THE CAMPSITE

Such beauty here:
The timbre of fun
pitched in childish delight;
The joy of parents present –
engaged, available, at rest;
Family love in balanced expression.

The backing of beauty too:
Mountains ancient, rugged, near,
rising in vast kranzes sheer,
Slow white cloud-bedecked, and lovely;
Trees green, in huge variety,
cool-shading,
peace adding,
many birds visited.

And the order of kindly hosting,
Of cleanliness and thoughtfulness,
Of attention to detail.

Rest comes here,
And sleep from sunset to dawn,
Joy at sunrise,
Perspective restored,
Strength to return.

Return to what?
To the battle for the good,
for the pure and the holy,
for a family-friendly nation,
God honouring and at peace;
And to hold this vision protected.
